What is biotin?
Technically known as vitamin B7, biotin comes from the Greek word biotos, which means sustenance or life-giving. Like other B vitamins, biotin helps your body use essential enzymes and carry nutrients throughout the body.

How much biotin do I need?
The daily recommended amount (DRA) of biotin is 30 micrograms (mcg) for adults 19 and older. When breastfeeding, patients should consume 35 mcg of biotin daily.
Excessive alcohol use, cirrhosis (liver disease), smoking, and biotinidase deficiency (a genetic disorder that prevents the body from processing biotin) may increase your need for vitamin B7.
A lack of biotin may lead to skin rash, loss of hair, high cholesterol, and heart problems.
Can biotin be found naturally in foods?

- Sweet potatoes are an excellent source of biotin. Just a half cup of cooked sweet potatoes contains 2.4 mcg of biotin.

One study found that high doses of biotin, up to 10,000 times the recommended daily value, could reduce symptoms in people with progressive MS. Also, people who took high-dose biotin did not develop any significant adverse reactions.

Can biotin influence weight?
Although biotin should never be used as a weight-loss regime, it can affect weight by breaking down carbohydrates so they can be used more efficiently.
Biotin heightens your metabolism, and food is absorbed faster. However, calorie intake mainly determines weight.
What are potential biotin side effects?
